A Quick A-Z of Common Ailments and Aromatherapy Relief
|
| Allergies |
Try calming oils such as Lavender, Chamomile,
Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang. Use in massages, baths, compresses
or inhalations depending on the type of allergy. |
| Aenemia |
Try Lemon, Thyme, or Chamomile in massage
oil or in a bath. |
| Arthritis |
Try painkilling oils such as Chamomile,
Lavender or Rosemary in a bath, local massage or as a compress
on the affected area. Black Pepper, Marjoram and Ginger improve
circulation. |
| Athlete's Foot |
A foot bath with Tea Tree oil, Eucalyptus,
Pathcouli, Lavender and / or Myrrh is effective as all the oils
are both soothing and anti-fungal. Add to unscented skin lotion
for a foot lotion. |

| Cellulite |

Chilblains

Lemon, Lavender, Chamomile, Cypress Peppermint,
are all useful in a massage oil, bath or footbath. |
| Cold Sores |
Eucalyptus, Bergamot, Lemon or Tea Tree
are effective. Dab Tea Tree oil directly neat or mixed with
vodka before the blisters come out. Alternate this use with
Lavender, to soothe. |
| Colds |
Lavender, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree or
Rosemary and Peppermint can be used in a bath or steam inhalation
to ease discomfort. A bath using Lavender and Marjoram will
help reduce any aches and feverishness. |
| Coughs |
Steam inhalation using Tea Tree, Thyme,
Eucalyptus, Lavender or Frankincense will help. Sandalwood is
particularly good for dry coughs. |
| Cystitis |
Chamomile, Sandalwood, Lavender, Frankincense
or Tea Tree oils can used in baths or washes at least once a
day. Use a weak dilution - about 1 % in boiled and cooled water
as a compress. |
| Dandruff |
Rosemary, Cedarwood, Tea Tree or Patchouli
oils can be massaged into the scalp, added to unscented shampoos
or used in the final rinse. |
| Depression |
For depression with sleeplessness, try
Lavender, Sandalwood, Chamomile, Clary Sage, or Ylang Ylang.
If suffering from lethargy then use Bergamot, Geranium, or Rose.
If combined with anxiety, then try Ylang Ylang and Neroli. Massage
is best, wherever possible, otherwise use in a bath or vaporiser. |
| Diahorrhea |
Chamomile, Lavender, and /or Peppermint
are useful when added to the bath, or massaged over the abdomen.
Eucalyptus is helpful when the ailment is caused by a virus. |
Eczema

Lavender, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Rose,
Melissa or Geranium are good in a bath or massage. You can also
add the oils to unscented skin lotion and rub into the skin.
A cool compress can also help to soothe irritated patches. |
| Fainting |
Put a couple of drops of Peppermint,
Lavender or Rosemary essential oils on a tissue to inhale or
open a bottle of one of these essential oils and place under
the person's nose. |
| Gingivitis |
Mouthwashes made with Tea Tree or Thyme
can kill the bacteria that causes this infection to inflame
the gums. Add Myrrh for healing and Orange oils to strengthen
the gums. |
| Glandular Fever |
Tea Tree Oil is an anti-viral oil, which
also strengthens the immune system. Use either in a bath or
as a massage. |
| Hair Loss & Baldness |
Lavender, Rosemary, Sage, Cedarwood,
Patchouli or Ylang. Ylang can either be massaged into the scalp
or added to mild unfragranced shampoos to stimulate the hair
follicle and scalp. |
| Hangover |
Lavender, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Fennel,
Juniper or Sandalwood all help to ease the morning after - in
a bath, in unscented shower gel, as an inhalation or in a vaporiser. |
| Hay Fever |
Try Chamomile in the bath or in a massage.
Steam or dry inhalations of Lavender and / or Eucalyptus for
sneezing and a runny nose. Can also be used in a bath. |
| Haemorrhoids |
Frankincense, Geranium, or Juniper used
in a bath, in a skin lotion, or on a cool compress. If constipation
is part of the problem, then massage the abdomen with Rosemary. |
| Headaches |
Neat Lavender rubbed into the temples,
forehead or back of the neck is good. Add peppermint if you
want to stay alert, or inhale Lavender, Peppermint or Eucalyptus
oils. |
| Indigestion |
Gently massage Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint,
Rosemary or Clary Sage over the stomach or apply as a hot compress. |
| Influenza |
Add Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint
or Tea Tree oils to a hot bath at the first sign of illness.
Can also be used in a steam inhalation. |
| Insomnia |
Lavender is the top tip for this common
ailment. Also try Chamomile, Sandalwood and / or Ylang Ylang.
Use in a warm bath at bedtime, in a massage, or in a vaporiser.
Try 2 drops of Lavender on a tissue, tucked under your pillow. |

Tea Tree will strengthen the immune system,
whilst Rosemary is a stimulant and Geranium acts as an anti-depressant.
Massage wherever possible is the best way of using oils for
ME, but baths and vaporisers are also useful. |
| Nausea & Vomiting |
Relieve symptoms with Lavender, Chamomile,
Peppermint, Rose, or Sandalwood. Apply on a warm compress laid
over the stomach, or gently massage over the stomach area. Can
also be used in a vaporiser. |
| Neuralgia |
Use Lavender, Chamomile, Rosemary, Geranium,
Clary Sage or Eucalyptus in the bath or most effectively on
a hot compress applied directly to the affected area. |
| Period Problems |
For heavy periods, try Geranium, Chamomile,
Rose or Frankincense oils. For irregular periods, try Clary
Sage, Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint, or Rose. For scanty periods,
try Lavender, Peppermint or Rose. For Painful periods, try Clary
Sage, Geranium, Chamomile, Lavender or Rose. These oils can
be used in a bath, in massage or as a compress. |
| PMS |
Try Clary Sage, Lavender or Chamomile.
Use Rosemary and Geranium for fluid retention or bloating. For
irritability and depression, choose Rose, or Chamomile. Use
in the bath, in massage or in a vaporiser. |
| Psoriasis |
Sedative and anti-depressant oils work
best for this condition, and can help reduce the stress that
exacerbates the condition. Try Lavender or Chamomile and use
in a bath, massage or add to unfragranced skin cream. |
| Stress |
Any of the sedative oils can be used
to help this all too common condition and help you to relax.
Try Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, or Clary Sage in a bath or massage.
For shorter periods of stress, try Rosemary, Geranium or Peppermint. |
| Thrush |
Baths, massage and local application
of anti fungal oils such as Lavender, Tea Tree, Myrrh, Geranium
or Bergamot oils will all help with vaginal thrush, whilst a
mouthwash made with Myrrh essential oil will help with oral
thrush. |
| Varicose Veins |
Cypress, Lemon, Rosemary, Lavender or
Juniper used in a bath or compress will help alleviate any discomfort.
Alternatively, they can be mixed with a skin cream and rubbed
gently over the affected area. If using massage, work gently
below the affected area, never above. Vary your choice of oils
for the best results. |
